How to Brew Your Tea 🍵
First things first — tea is a come-as-you-are kind of activity.
No fancy gadgets? No problem. All you need is hot water — from a spigot, a kettle, or even a slightly grumpy microwave — and your tea will still taste wonderful.
But if you want to put on your “tea scientist” hat, measure like a pro, and coax out every subtle note from each leaf… well, you’re in the right place. Grab your favorite mug, take a deep breath, and let’s steep like champions:
Black Tea
Water Temperature: 200–212°F / 93–100°C (just off a rolling boil)
Steeping Time: 3–5 minutes
Fun Tip: Strong, bold teas like Assam or English Breakfast love a long soak, while delicate Darjeelings are happiest around 3 minutes. Don’t overthink it — taste as you go!
Oolong Tea
Water Temperature: 190–200°F / 88–93°C
Steeping Time: 3–5 minutes (these leaves can dance through multiple steeps)
Fun Tip: Oolong leaves are a bit shy at first — let them bloom and reveal their personality with each steep. Watch the leaves unfurl and enjoy the evolving flavors!
Green Tea
Water Temperature: 160–180°F / 70–80°C
Steeping Time: 2–3 minutes
Fun Tip: Hotter water can turn your green tea bitter faster than you can say “matcha latte.” Keep it gentle to enjoy the soft grassy notes.
White Tea
Water Temperature: 170–185°F / 75–85°C
Steeping Time: 4–5 minutes
Fun Tip: Go a little heavy on the leaves for a richer flavor. White tea is delicate — it likes a slow, patient brew.
Rooibos Tea
Water Temperature: 212°F / 100°C (boiling is perfect)
Steeping Time: 5–7 minutes
Fun Tip: Naturally caffeine-free and sweet, rooibos can handle a long soak — bonus points if you add milk or a drizzle of honey.
Tisane / Herbal Tea
Water Temperature: 212°F / 100°C (boiling)
Steeping Time: 5–7 minutes (longer for roots or bark-based blends)
Fun Tip: Peppermint and chamomile wake up quickly, but ginger, cinnamon, or other roots like a little extra time to strut their stuff.
Pu-erh Tea
Water Temperature: 200–212°F / 93–100°C
Steeping Time: 2–4 minutes (multiple steeps are encouraged)
Fun Tip: Pu-erh loves a little attention — swirl the leaves gently as it steeps to release its deep, earthy aroma. Each steep will evolve, so watch the flavor grow!
Herbal / Functional Tea Blends
Water Temperature: 200–212°F / 93–100°C
Steeping Time: 5–7 minutes
Fun Tip: These blends are forgiving. Taste as you go, and let the aromas and flavors tell you when it’s ready.
Pro Tips for Maximum Tea Joy:
Pre-warm your cup or teapot so your brew stays warmer longer.
Measure your leaves: About 1 teaspoon per 8 oz / 240 ml of water for loose leaf, or 1 bag per cup.
Taste and adjust: Too weak? Steep longer. Too strong? Shorten the time. Tea is personal — make it yours!
Remember: Tea is all about the experience. Whether you’re brewing with precision or just letting your kettle do the work, it’s about slowing down, smelling the leaves, and savoring the moment.
* Disclaimer: Microwaving water can be dangerous. Water can overheat and “explode” when disturbed. Always use caution, heat in short intervals, and never leave it unattended. When in doubt, a kettle or stovetop is the safest option. Always brew safely!
